Northern Gyeonggi Province Hit by Heavy Rain, Flood and Landslide Warnings Issued

Northern Gyeonggi Province is grappling with significant rainfall, with accumulations reaching approximately 150 millimeters overnight. The heavy downpour has triggered flood advisories along key river sections and prompted landslide warnings in affected areas. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts continued precipitation, with potential for up to 200 millimeters on July 18-19 and an additional 20-60 millimeters on July 20.

As of Sunday morning, cumulative rainfall figures show significant amounts in various locations, including 153.5 mm in Paju's Tanhyun, 153 mm in Yangju's Nam-myeon, and 150 mm in Dongducheon's Habongam. The rapid and intense rainfall has led to a surge in water levels in rivers across the region. The Han River Flood Control Office has issued flood advisories for specific points, including the Gongeungcheon river at Wangdanggyo in Goyang, Pocheoncheon river at Pocheondaegeyo in Pocheon, and Sincheon river at Songcheonkyo in Dongducheon.

Local authorities have disseminated disaster alerts via text messages, urging citizens to exercise caution. They are advising residents to refrain from accessing riverbanks and to reroute their vehicles to avoid flooded areas. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has also issued warnings for potential landslides in Paju, Yangju, Pocheon, and Yeoncheon, areas particularly vulnerable due to the saturated ground conditions.

Officials are emphasizing the danger of sudden water level increases in valleys and rivers due to the short bursts of intense rain. They strongly advise against approaching or camping near these areas. The situation underscores the immediate risks posed by severe weather events and the importance of heeding official warnings to ensure public safety.
