Northern Taiwan braces for heavy rain Sunday; widespread wet weather expected next week

Northern Taiwan, including the greater Taipei area, should prepare for localized short-duration heavy rainfall on Sunday. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecasts that a prevailing southwest wind will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms, with a possibility of localized heavy downpours, especially in mountainous regions of central and eastern Taiwan. Beginning Monday, the weather pattern shifts as a low-pressure system is expected to envelop the island, ushering in a period of widespread wet conditions that will persist through Thursday. During this period, southern and eastern Taiwan will see scattered showers, while Keelung, the northern coast, and Taipei may experience sporadic light rain. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in western and eastern mountainous areas, with potential heavy downpours south of Hsinchu. Looking further ahead, the CWA anticipates that the low-pressure influence will intensify on Friday and Saturday. Southern and southeastern Taiwan could face localized showers or thunderstorms with potential heavy rainfall. Other areas might experience scattered afternoon thunderstorms, particularly in mountainous regions north of Taipei. The CWA's long-range forecast indicates that the first week (August 15-21) will be influenced by the southwest wind, bringing localized showers and thunderstorms to central and southern Taiwan, while other regions are expected to be mostly cloudy to sunny with afternoon thunderstorms. The second week (August 22-28) will see the low-pressure system continue, leading to unstable weather with scattered showers in the south and east. However, by the latter half of the second week, moisture is expected to decrease, resulting in mostly cloudy to sunny conditions across the island. Forecasters also noted the possibility of tropical disturbances forming in the South China Sea and east of the Philippines, but cautioned that predictions remain highly uncertain.
