Norwegian journalist hails Indian minister's resignation as 'historic day for youth'

Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng celebrated the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25, hailing it as a "historic day for the youth in India." Celebrations were reportedly held at Jantar Mantar following the minister's departure from his post.

Pradhan announced his resignation on X, stating he made the decision with the students' future in mind. He expressed a desire to prevent "anti-national elements" from exploiting the situation and to ensure students could focus on their studies without legal entanglements. His resignation comes after weeks of intense student protests across Delhi, demanding his removal due to alleged exam irregularities, most notably the NEET-UG paper leak.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), an organization leading the protests, met with union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh prior to Pradhan's resignation. The CJP indicated that the government had requested a day to consider the minister's resignation. While Pradhan's resignation fulfills one of the CJP's key demands, the group stated that other demands remain outstanding and that protests at Jantar Mantar would continue until they are met. These pending demands include ₹1 crore compensation for the families of students who died by suicide and no action against student protesters.
