Norwegian man barricaded himself inside house for four days with weapons

Norwegian police arrested a man overnight Saturday after he spent four days barricaded inside a house on the island of Dyrøya in northern Norway.

Police first went to the address on Tuesday evening but withdrew after officers were threatened with what appeared to be weapons. The man fired a shot at police the following night.

Police acted at a time when the risk was assessed to be lower for everyone involved.

Authorities evacuated his neighbors and closed a road while trying to persuade him to leave voluntarily. Police also used drones to monitor him and received assistance from several other police districts.

Operations leader Robin Lindberg of Troms Police said officers acted when they judged the risk to everyone involved had fallen. No one was injured during the operation, but police did not comment on the man’s condition. Lindberg also declined to discuss the methods used to end the standoff.

The assessment throughout has been that any operation would involve a significant risk to personnel and to the individual himself.
