Norwegian Princess Successfully Undergoes Lung Transplant; Will Remain in Hospital for Weeks

Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has successfully undergone a lung transplant and is currently recovering in the hospital. The procedure took place on June 5, and she is expected to remain hospitalized for several more weeks, according to Professor Are Holm from the Oslo University Hospital.

The 50-year-old consort of Crown Prince Haakon was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. This chronic lung disease causes scarring, leading to reduced oxygen intake. The Oslo University Hospital had placed her on the lung transplant waiting list earlier in June, noting a significant decline in her health that likely gave her only a year to live without the surgery.

Crown Prince Haakon had previously shared that the family had noticed a change in Mette-Marit's condition, with her breathing becoming increasingly difficult. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere commended the princess for her openness about her health struggles, suggesting it could help others facing similar challenges.

Mette-Marit's journey to royalty began when she met Crown Prince Haakon at a music festival in 1999. At the time, she was an unmarried single mother. Their unexpected romance captured media attention and eventually gained public acceptance.
