Noskova shakes off nerves to beat Muchova in Wimbledon final

Linda Noskova battled nerves and a resurgent Karolina Muchova to claim her maiden Grand Slam title in the Wimbledon women's singles final on Saturday. The 21-year-old Czech secured a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory after a dramatic contest that saw her squander five match points in the second set.

Noskova had appeared in complete control, winning the first set in just 32 minutes and leading 5-2 in the second. However, a determined Muchova fought back, saving three match points at 2-5 and another in the subsequent game. The momentum shifted, and Muchova, the 29-year-old, managed to drag the match into a decider after winning five successive games.

Despite the setback, Noskova found her composure in the third set, regaining the lead to go up 5-2. Though Muchova managed to pull a game back as shadows lengthened on Centre Court, Noskova held her nerve when serving for the match a second time. She clinched her first major title with an unreturnable serve, collapsing onto the court in a mixture of relief and joy.

Noskova's triumph marks a significant achievement for Czech tennis. She is the third player from the Czech Republic in four years to lift the Wimbledon women's singles trophy, following Marketa Vondrousova in 2023 and Barbora Krejcikova in 2024.
