Nothing to suggest Widdecombe killing was politically motivated, police say

Police investigating the death of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe have stated that there is "nothing to suggest it was politically motivated." The investigation is ongoing following the arrest of a 28-year-old man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Saturday.

The 78-year-old former politician, who also served as an MEP and was a spokesperson for Reform UK, was discovered dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday. Police believe she had sustained serious injuries approximately 24 hours before being found.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman of Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that officers are remaining "open-minded" about the motive but do not believe there is any threat to the wider public. The arrest was made by Counter Terrorism Police North East and South Yorkshire Police on behalf of the force. Longman also stated there is no information to suggest the attack was terrorism-related.

The family of Ann Widdecombe has been informed of the latest developments and is being supported by specialist officers. Devon and Cornwall Police have received over 120 pieces of information from the public and are urging anyone with further details to come forward as a priority.
