Novi Sad Commemorates Train Station Canopy Collapse, Demands Accountability

In Novi Sad, citizens gathered to mark 20 months since the tragic collapse of a canopy at the city's train station, an event that claimed 16 lives. The commemoration, organized by the Novi Sad Choirs Network, aimed to remind authorities and the public that no one has yet been held accountable for the disaster.

Participants convened near Futoška Pijaca before proceeding to the train station for a silent vigil. The event stressed a somber, commemorative tone, with 16 minutes of silence observed at the site of the tragedy. Saša Raletić Jotanović of the Novi Sad Choirs Network stated that the gathering was a small gesture to show public dissatisfaction and an expectation for a stronger governmental response.

Raletić Jotanović also addressed the recent court ruling concerning student Andrej Tanko, describing him as a symbol of student activism and the fight for a better future. She criticized the verdict as "devastating" and indicative of discrimination within judicial processes, particularly concerning students. She contrasted the swift, often negative outcomes for students with perceived inaction or lack of resolution in cases involving individuals connected to the authorities.

A similar commemorative gathering was also held in Niš, underscoring a broader public concern over the incident and the lack of accountability. The event in Novi Sad serves as a persistent reminder of the tragedy and the ongoing demand for justice.
