NPA’s $1bn port modernisation programme targets trade, efficiency – Dantsoho

Nigeria is embarking on a significant $1 billion port modernization program aimed at revitalizing its maritime sector, boosting trade, and establishing the country as the leading maritime hub in West and Central Africa. The initiative encompasses infrastructure upgrades, digitalization, and enhanced cargo efficiency.

Physical construction works for the $1bn port modernisation programme will officially commence by the end of Q3 2026. Ahead of that, we are wrapping up all final non-construction prerequisites.

Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), stated that physical construction for the $1 billion program is slated to begin by the end of the third quarter of 2026, following the completion of non-construction prerequisites like community engagements and stakeholder consultations. Once fully operational, the program is projected to cut vessel turnaround times by as much as 50% and substantially improve cargo-handling efficiency.

Once fully phased in, the programme is projected to deliver up to a 50 per cent reduction in vessel turnaround times and significantly improve cargo-handling efficiency.

To address persistent congestion at Lagos ports, the NPA is upgrading its Electronic Call-Up System (Eto) to enhance security and eliminate fraudulent activities. Additionally, barge operations have been expanded to handle over 30% of containerized cargo via waterways, and regular freight rail services now connect Lagos ports directly to dry ports in Kano and Kaduna. These measures aim to reduce truck density on port access roads and provide more cost-effective evacuation options.

The upgrade will tighten security integration within the Eto platform to eliminate illegal human intervention and the issuance of fraudulent call-up slips.

Digitalization is central to the NPA's strategy for streamlining trade facilitation and reducing the cost of doing business. The authority is fast-tracking the deployment of the Port Community System, serving as the primary digital platform for all maritime trade stakeholders. This system is designed for seamless integration with the Federal Government's National Single Window initiative, further simplifying trade processes.
