NPFL season to open with South-West derby; historic prize money announced

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is set to kick off its 2026/27 season on August 28, with the opening fixture featuring a highly anticipated South-West derby between five-time champions Shooting Stars and newly promoted Inter Lagos. The unveiling of the season's fixtures at the league's Annual General Meeting in Ibadan signals the start of another campaign filled with returning powerhouses, ambitious newcomers, and compelling opening-weekend matchups.

The curtain-raiser will take place under the floodlights at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, setting an exciting tone for the season. The remaining Matchday One fixtures are scheduled for Sunday, August 30. Notable clashes include former title contenders Rivers United beginning their campaign at home against Plateau United, and Doma United welcoming Sporting Lagos.

Other opening weekend fixtures include Kwara United hosting Kano Pillars at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl Stadium in Ilorin, Barau FC facing Nasarawa United in Kano, and Abia Warriors entertaining Kun Khalifat. Last season's fourth-placed team, Ikorodu City, will start at home against Ranchers Bees, while Bendel Insurance faces Warri Wolves in a South-South derby. Rangers will host Katsina United in Enugu, and Niger Tornadoes are set to take on former champions Enyimba in Minna.

This season promises an early test for many clubs as they vie for domestic honors and continental qualification. Adding to the excitement, the NPFL has announced a historic ₦1 billion prize money for the champions, underscoring the league's commitment to raising the stakes and rewarding success in what is expected to be another fiercely contested season.
