NRS, CITN deepen collaboration on tax education drive

The National Revenue Service (NRS) has reaffirmed its commitment to voluntary tax compliance, emphasizing the critical role of taxpayer education one year after Nigeria's significant tax reforms. This commitment was highlighted during the inaugural National Tax Awareness Day, an event designed to assess progress since the reforms were signed into law in 2025.

The nationwide campaign, themed “Tax Awareness for National Growth: Reform, Compliance and Shared Prosperity,” involved CITN's 49 District Societies across Nigeria and internationally. The event brought together tax professionals, government agencies, businesses, and the public to promote education, encourage voluntary compliance, and deepen understanding of tax laws. This commemoration coincided with the first anniversary of the Tax Reform Acts, which are seen as a major step toward a more transparent, efficient, and technology-driven tax administration system.

Activities included roadshows, market sensitisation, media engagements, tax clinics, and school competitions. A key moment was a courtesy visit by the CITN President to the NRS headquarters, where both institutions reviewed progress and reaffirmed their dedication to taxpayer education. The NRS, represented by Mohammed Abubakar, commended CITN for institutionalizing the awareness day, stating, “Tax awareness is the foundation of voluntary compliance, and voluntary compliance remains essential to building a sustainable tax system that supports national growth and shared prosperity.”
