NSA warns Wi-Fi users: Reboot your router monthly

The US National Security Agency (NSA) has issued an urgent warning, urging all internet users to make a habit of regularly restarting their Wi-Fi routers. This seemingly simple act, often overlooked in the corner of our digital lives, is presented as a crucial security measure against sophisticated cyber threats.

The recommendation stems from the disruption of a global network of compromised home and office routers used by a Russian military intelligence unit. These hackers targeted not only large corporations but also ordinary users, turning their devices into tools for stealing passwords, intercepting internet traffic, and attacking critical infrastructure.

Rebooting a router for thirty seconds to a minute is described as a simple act of digital self-defense. Many advanced attacks rely on malware that resides only in the router's temporary RAM, which is cleared when the device loses power. Restarting the router interrupts these malicious processes and severs any connection an attacker may have established.

While not a permanent solution, this reboot acts as a "pause button," temporarily removing attackers from the system and providing valuable time to implement more long-term security measures. Home routers are particularly attractive targets as they serve as the gateway to a household's entire digital ecosystem, especially in the era of remote work where the lines between private and business networks have blurred.
