NSC Names Enekwechi as Team Nigeria’s Male Captain for 2026 C’Wealth Games

Nigeria's National Sports Commission (NSC) has appointed shot put star Chukwuebuka Enekwechi as the male captain for Team Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Enekwechi, a silver medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, will lead the contingent alongside female captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo, a two-time Olympic champion.

The NSC highlighted that the selection of both athletes aligns with the commission's vision of establishing a clear mentorship pathway for young Nigerian athletes. "We have picked individuals who do not only have a strong track records in their various sports but are also clear mentors to the young athletes for how they have sacrificially dedicated themselves to the country with utmost integrity and respect throughout their careers," stated Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC.

Olopade added that the appointments serve as a recognition of the athletes' contributions to placing Nigeria's flag on the global map, particularly under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's "Renewed Hope Agenda" for sports. Team Nigeria is scheduled to depart for a three-week training camp in Aberdeen on July 2, 2026, before the Games commence on July 23.

The athletes will be donning designer Puma apparel for the Games, which is set to be unveiled on Wednesday, July 1, by the National Sports Commission.
