NSCDC uncovers fake university in Lagos, rescues 106 students

Authorities in Lagos have uncovered a suspected fake university operating out of a three-bedroom apartment, leading to the rescue of 106 youths. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Badagry Area Command conducted the raid following intelligence gathering. The alleged proprietor, who lured young people with promises of admission into a foreign university, has been arrested.

The institution, which reportedly lacked an official name, registration, or campus, presented itself online as a distance-learning center affiliated with an overseas university. Students, aged 19 to 24, were recruited from various Nigerian states and neighboring West African countries like Niger, Cameroon, and Togo.

Victims allegedly paid admission and processing fees ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦1.5 million. Foreign nationals reportedly paid between $400 and $500. Preliminary findings suggest the scheme operated like a Ponzi or chain-marketing system, offering commissions for bringing in new recruits. The NSCDC is continuing its investigation into the operation.
