Nuclear energy deal meets with concern: "Turbulence"

The United States has signed a nuclear energy agreement with Saudi Arabia, allowing American companies to assist in building two civilian nuclear reactors. This deal fulfills a long-standing objective for the oil-rich kingdom to develop its own civil nuclear power.

However, the agreement has sparked concerns among experts regarding nuclear proliferation. Kjell Engelbrekt, a professor of political science, noted that the conditions of the deal are a source of worry, particularly in relation to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The treaty aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and related knowledge.

A key point of contention is Saudi Arabia's refusal to allow international organizations, such as the IAEA, access for inspections under the terms of the agreement with the US. This differs from a previous agreement between the US and the United Arab Emirates, which included more restrictions on enrichment.

Saudi Arabia has ambitious plans to build 16 nuclear power plants by 2030. The current agreement with the US is seen by some as a step towards developing the capability for uranium enrichment, a process that can lead to the creation of nuclear weapons, despite the complexity involved.

The geopolitical landscape has influenced Saudi Arabia's strategic calculations. While past discussions with Russia on nuclear energy cooperation were halted, China has remained a consistent partner, with both nations signing agreements in defense, security, and energy.
