Nuevo León electoral council rejects Jesús Cantú proposal over Morena links

Nuevo León’s electoral council rejected the proposal to appoint Jesús Cantú Escalante as executive secretary after his possible designation triggered protests and political reservations.

The General Council of the State Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute of Nuevo León voted against the proposal by six votes to one. The nomination had been submitted by institute president Beatriz Adriana Camacho.

About 30 people gathered outside the institute before the extraordinary session, carrying signs and chanting against the proposed appointment. They questioned Cantú Escalante’s proximity to Morena and pointed to his previous professional relationship with figures associated with the political movement, including Tatiana Clouthier, who has been mentioned as a possible Morena candidate for governor of Nuevo León.

Party representatives and council members also expressed reservations during the session about Cantú’s professional record and links to Morena-affiliated governments. Following the rejection, Camacho said the institute’s presidency would directly appoint an acting head of the executive secretariat. That person may remain in office for a maximum of one year.
