NUJ Decries Ikire Killings, Tasks New Osun CP on Security

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Osun State has strongly condemned the recent killings and attacks that occurred around the Naira and Kobo Motor Park in Ikire. The union expressed deep concern over the deaths of two individuals and the subsequent attack on a police patrol team responding to the incident, which resulted in injuries to two officers and damage to a police vehicle.

The incident is a serious threat to public safety and peaceful coexistence in the state.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, and Secretary, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju, the NUJ described the events as a significant threat to public safety and peaceful coexistence within the state. The union has called upon the Osun State Police Command to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the violence. They demand that those responsible for the killings, the assault on police officers, and the destruction of government property be apprehended and brought to justice.

The NUJ also took the opportunity to welcome the new Commissioner of Police for Osun State, CP Ibrahim Zungura. They urged him to make intelligence-led policing, community engagement, and rapid response to distress calls his top priorities. Furthermore, the union called on the new police leadership to actively combat cultism, thuggery, and organized violence, ensuring that attacks on police personnel are rigorously investigated and prosecuted. The NUJ emphasized the importance of professionalism, respect for human rights, and accountability in police operations, advocating for regular engagement and transparent communication to build public trust.
