Nunavik police officer charged with assault after Quebec watchdog investigation

A Nunavik Police Service officer appeared in court in northern Quebec on charges of assault and assault with a weapon, according to Quebec’s police watchdog.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes said the officer appeared Monday in Kuujjuarapik, a town on the shore of Hudson’s Bay. The alleged assaults took place on Aug. 26, 2025, in the village of Umiujaq, about 160 kilometres northeast of Kuujjuarapik.

The officer faces the charges following an investigation by the BEI. A spokesperson said the case is expected to proceed to trial.

The BEI investigates criminal allegations against police officers when the victim or complainant is Indigenous. It also examines allegations of sexual offences involving on-duty police officers and cases in which a civilian is killed, seriously injured or shot during a police intervention or while in custody.
