Nvidia, Amkor strike $1.5 billion chip packaging deal

Chip industry giants Nvidia and Amkor Technology have forged a significant multi-year partnership valued at $1.5 billion, aimed at bolstering advanced semiconductor packaging and testing capacity within the United States. This collaboration is a strategic move to meet the escalating demand for AI infrastructure.

Under the agreement, Nvidia will provide a prepayment to facilitate the expansion of Amkor's U.S. advanced packaging operations, with a specific focus on increasing capacity in Arizona. The partnership will also involve joint development of cutting-edge packaging and testing technologies tailored for Nvidia's AI and accelerated-computing platforms. This includes innovations in combining diverse chip types within a single package.

Amkor Technology, already a supplier for Nvidia's existing product lines such as data center processors, seeks to leverage this expanded deal to introduce novel packaging solutions to the market.
