NYC deploys 2,600 officers for summer patrols, adds 200 to Bronx

New York City officials have unveiled a comprehensive public safety strategy in anticipation of the summer months, involving the deployment of 2,600 police officers for evening and overnight patrols across the city. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the initiative, which also includes bolstering the presence in the Bronx with an additional 200 officers.

The increased police presence is particularly focused on the Bronx, where authorities anticipate a higher risk of violence. This comes despite a general downward trend in crime across the rest of the city. The strategy targets 72 zones identified as having the highest incidence of criminal activity. Officers will conduct foot patrols to reinforce police visibility in streets, parks, and beaches.

Commissioner Tisch described the restructuring as a long-overdue task. The Bronx, which generated nearly a million 911 calls in 2025, will now operate under two distinct command areas: the Bronx North Patrol and the Bronx South Patrol. Each command will be equipped with its own specialized units, including homicide investigation squads, narcotics teams, vehicle theft units, evidence collection personnel, and neighborhood security teams.

The reinforcement in the Bronx is partly attributed to the addition of 4,000 new officers to the NYPD last year. The Bronx North Patrol will be based at the 48th precinct, led by Chief Benjamin Gurley, while the Bronx South Patrol will operate from the former 40th precinct, under Chief Brian Hennessy. Statistics indicate the Bronx accounts for a significant portion of the city's homicides and firearm incidents so far this year, making the enhanced security measures a direct response to district-specific crime data.
