NYC Mayor Considers Arresting Netanyahu During UN Visit

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is actively considering the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit the city in September for the UN General Assembly. Adams, in an interview with The New York Times, labeled Netanyahu a "war criminal" and confirmed that the city's legal department is in active discussions about the possibility of an arrest.

Adams stated that any legal action would be pursued within the existing framework of the law, without creating new legislation. This stance echoes his previous statements during his mayoral campaign, where he vowed to have Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin arrested upon arrival in New York.

The potential arrest, however, is fraught with legal complexities. The United States is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the International Criminal Court (ICC), and has historically opposed the court's jurisdiction. Furthermore, Netanyahu, as a head of state, may be entitled to diplomatic immunity, particularly within the UN headquarters. Former U.S. Justice Department official Koh Hong-joo suggested that while Netanyahu might have immunity within the UN premises, he could be subject to arrest if he travels within New York City.
