NYC Mayor Launches "Know Your Rights" Comic for Migrant Communities

New York City is empowering its migrant communities with a new educational comic book, "Know Your Rights," launched by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels. This initiative, presented by the New York City Public School System (NYCPS) in collaboration with the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA), aims to inform residents about their legal protections during encounters with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The comic is available in over 14 languages, including Spanish.

The publication features fictional stories based on real immigration raids and legal guides, written by Alex Segura and illustrated by David Hahn. It addresses four main scenarios: interactions at home, during workplace encounters, at school, and what to do if detained. The comic emphasizes the right of every student to attend public school regardless of immigration status, national origin, or religion, as stated by NYCPS.

"Know Your Rights" provides practical advice, such as what actions to take if ICE agents appear at one's door and how to prepare for potential detention. It advises individuals to designate a trusted contact person, memorize their contact number, and secure important documents. The comic was released in Spring 2026, with printed copies available at the Latinx Freedom and Soul Summit and planned for distribution in middle and high schools across the city in the fall.
