NYC Mayor Mamdani Tackles 'Wage Theft' with Initiative Aiding Migrant Workers

New York City is launching a new strategy to protect its most vulnerable residents from predatory practices. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced an initiative designed to bolster the city's response to wage theft, rental harassment, and fraud, with a specific focus on immigrant communities.

The program establishes a formal partnership between the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) and the Manhattan District Attorney's office. This collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed on August 20, will enable these agencies to share information, data, and investigative strategies. The goal is to streamline efforts and pursue cases more effectively without each agency duplicating work.

Mayor Mamdani emphasized that exploiting workers, tenants, or immigrants is a crime that will be prosecuted. "If someone steals your wages, harasses you to get you out of your home, or defrauds you because of your immigration status, that is a crime, and we are going to prosecute it as such," he stated in an official release. The initiative specifically targets "notarios" who offer fraudulent immigration services, a common scam affecting newcomers.

The partnership allows for the exchange of confidential information when necessary for investigations, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws. Both the DCWP and the District Attorney's office will coordinate investigative actions and can pursue simultaneous criminal and civil proceedings. While this alliance enhances their joint capabilities, each agency retains its independent authority within its jurisdiction.
