NYSC renews call for improved welfare, safety

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reiterated its call for stronger partnerships with employers to improve the welfare, safety, and professional growth of corps members across Nigeria. This emphasis came during the 2026 NYSC Corps Employers’ Workshop held in Umuahia, Abia State.

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, Director General of the NYSC, highlighted the workshop's theme, “Fine Tuning Stakeholders’ Collaboration to Enhance Corps Members’ Welfare and Workplace Experience.” He stressed that the scheme's future relevance hinges on robust partnerships between government institutions, employers, and host communities. Nafiu acknowledged employers' ongoing support, noting their critical role in shaping the corps members' service year through meaningful workplace engagement.

He reminded employers of their statutory obligations under the NYSC Act, which include providing suitable accommodation or payment in lieu, transportation support, adequate security, and access to healthcare where possible. He also stressed that corps members' welfare extends to mental wellbeing, professional growth, workplace inclusion, and protection from discrimination and exploitation.

Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, Chairman of the NYSC Abia State Governing Board, urged employers to treat corps members with dignity and fairness. While acknowledging the support from many employers, he expressed regret that some still subject corps members to rejection and poor conditions that hinder their development. The administration of Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of corps members serving in Abia State.
