OAS General Assembly in Panama to cost $15 million, minister says

Panama is preparing to host the upcoming General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), an event slated for June 20-27 that carries an estimated price tag of $15 million. The significant investment covers a wide range of logistical necessities, including accommodation, transportation, security, catering, and translation services for the expected influx of international delegates.

The investment includes expenses related to hotels, transportation, security, food, logistics, communication, translation services, among others, to serve the international delegations that will participate in the hemispheric meeting.

Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez highlighted the extensive six-month preparation period for the assembly, which coincides with the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Amphictyonic Congress of Panama. The event is poised to attract over 2,500 attendees, comprising foreign ministers, diplomats, business leaders, and members of the media. Notably, five regional heads of state, in addition to Panama's President José Raúl Mulino, have confirmed their attendance.

Martínez-Acha emphasized that the strong international participation underscores confidence in Panama as a diplomatic hub for regional and hemispheric discussions. The assembly's agenda includes parallel meetings and a Global Leaders Forum, focusing on critical issues such as democracy, security, sustainable development, innovation, and multilateralism.

Key discussions are expected to address the situation in Venezuela and the broader strengthening of republican systems, according to Vice Minister Carlos Guevara Mann. A solemn session on June 22 will mark the bicentennial of the Amphictyonic Congress, followed by the official opening of the OAS General Assembly, featuring remarks from the OAS Secretary General and President Mulino.
