Obarrio residents request new citizen consultation on road improvement project

Residents of the Obarrio community in Panama have requested a new citizen consultation regarding a road improvement project, which was initially approved via public consultation a year ago. During a recent meeting with local authorities and deputies, neighbors expressed concerns about the project's scope and suggested that other community needs should take precedence.

Caterina Sáenz, president of the Obarrio Local Development Board, highlighted lingering questions about the necessary permits and studies for the project's execution. "The Ministry of Public Works is the one that must give us permits; there must be studies by the MOP, and to this day, we have no information, nor has the representative communicated that this has been approved and has the permits," Sáenz stated. Residents are particularly concerned about the proposed design for the intersections and the lack of supporting technical studies.

However, César Kiamko, the representative for Bella Vista, believes some residents misunderstand the project's implications. "People interpret that the project means lanes are being eliminated and that the circulation of buses, ambulances, and fire trucks is being impeded, but the reality is that everything being done corresponds to design information that allows for such things to be done properly," Kiamko explained. He assured that the initiative aims to optimize mobility and road safety in various parts of Obarrio.

Local authorities have indicated that the concerns raised by residents will be taken into consideration as the project analysis continues. The initiative's stated goal is to enhance traffic flow and safety within the Obarrio area.
