Oberkirch Named Switzerland's Most Attractive Municipality in 2026 Ranking

Oberkirch, a municipality in the canton of Lucerne, has claimed the top spot as Switzerland's most attractive commune in the 2026 rankings. The annual assessment, compiled by the magazine Bilanz using data from real estate specialist IAZI AG, highlights a continued dominance of German-speaking Switzerland in desirable living locations. Nine other municipalities from the eastern and central parts of the country secured places within the top 10, underscoring a regional trend.

This year's results show a stark contrast between German-speaking and French-speaking regions. The first French-speaking commune to appear on the list is Mies in the canton of Vaud, which ranks 32nd. Other notable French-speaking entries include Lutry (VD), Geneva's Chêne-Bougeries, Collonge-Bellerive, Cologny, Pully (VD), Pregny-Chambésy (GE), and Vandœuvres (GE), all appearing within the top 100 but significantly lower than their German-speaking counterparts.

Municipalities in the cantons of Jura, Valais (with the exception of Zermatt), Neuchâtel, and Fribourg did not make it into the top 100. This geographical disparity in attractiveness, as measured by factors including population growth, economic strength, and tourism, reinforces a long-standing observation about the differing development trajectories across Switzerland's linguistic regions. The data suggests that factors contributing to attractiveness, as defined by the ranking, are more concentrated in the German-speaking cantons.
