A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake and numerous aftershocks struck off eastern Indonesia early Saturday, causing at least two deaths and injuring one person. Tsunami waves, measuring less than 1 meter (3 feet), were recorded in several coastal areas.

The Indonesian disaster mitigation agency, BNPB, confirmed the casualties and reported that the tsunami warning was lifted approximately three hours after the initial quake. However, the tremors caused significant disruption, with video footage from Maumere, a main town in Sikka Regency on Flores Island, showing parts of a building collapsing into rubble as people fled into the streets.

Residents across East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and parts of South Sulawesi felt strong shaking, with reports of tremors lasting about a minute. A hospital in Ende district moved patients outside, and landslides were reported. The Geophysics agency BMKG recorded the initial quake at a depth of 15 km (9 miles). Australia's tsunami warning centre confirmed there was no threat to the Australian mainland.
