M. Munir-Uz-Zaman, a respected former secretary and ambassador, passed away peacefully at his home on May 28 at the age of 90. His death was attributed to complications from old age.

Zaman, a member of the 1958 Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP) batch, embarked on a long and impactful career in public service. Before Bangladesh's independence, he held significant administrative roles, including Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) in Kishoreganj and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in Comilla, and Deputy Commissioner (DC) in Bogra. He also served in Pakistan's central government as a deputy secretary in the External Finance Division and as chairman of EPSCIC.

Following Bangladesh's independence, Zaman rose to senior leadership positions within the newly formed nation. He served as secretary to several key ministries, including Power, Water, Energy and Mineral Resources; Civil Aviation and Tourism; Relief and Disaster Management; Environment and Climate Change; and the External Resources Division, now known as the Economic Relations Division of the Ministry of Finance.

After his retirement from government service, Zaman continued to contribute his expertise. He worked as a senior consultant at the World Bank Group and later served as chief consultant to Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia on the White Paper Cell. His distinguished career culminated in his appointment as Bangladesh's ambassador to the Philippines before he eventually retired completely.

His first namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) was scheduled to be held at Gulshan Azad Mosque on Friday, May 29, after Jumma prayers. An alumnus of Dhaka University, the University of Cambridge (UK), and Williams College (USA), Zaman was widely recognized for his unwavering commitment to upholding national interests throughout his career.
