Female students at Dhaka University are demanding an end to the restrictive 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM curfew in their residential halls. The student platform Oborodhbashini has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the university authorities, warning of further action if their demands are not met. The platform submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam outlining three key demands: scrapping the overnight restriction, ensuring 24-hour access to halls, and allowing female relatives of students to enter women's halls. Oborodhbashini also seeks permission for non-resident students and students from other halls to enter any hall with valid identification, and for female students from other halls to stay overnight with prior approval. The platform highlighted that 57 percent of female students at Dhaka University lack residential facilities. They questioned the rule preventing non-resident students from resting or staying overnight in halls despite paying regular fees. The students also criticized the restrictions on the entry of mothers, sisters, and other female relatives. Oborodhbashini argued that the 10 PM to 6 AM restriction, ostensibly for security, actually creates opportunities for harassment of female students regarding their nighttime movements. The campaign began on July 31 with graffiti and has included press briefings and organized programs. A gathering on campus is planned for Monday afternoon.
