Police in Cyprus have recovered the decomposed body of a Bangladeshi student, Shahriar Ahmed Imon, 22, who had been missing for 10 days. His family claims he was murdered, and a Bangladeshi national, Shahin Babu, 22, has been arrested in connection with the crime.

As the police could not show any significant progress, we agreed to send the ransom money. After negotiations, the amount was settled at Tk 500,000.

โ€” Nayon AhmedShahriar's younger brother describes the family's decision to pay ransom.

Imon, who had enrolled in a Cypriot university three months prior, disappeared on June 11 after leaving Oroklini for a new job in Larnaca. His body and the suspected murder weapon were found on Sunday in Kofinou, Larnaca, based on information from the suspect. His mother last spoke to him on the afternoon of June 11, when he mentioned starting a new job that night. He shared this with his father, Nasir Mia, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Greece, and his roommate, Raihan Mia, who also resides in Cyprus.

Communication with Imon ceased shortly after he reportedly reached his workplace around 9:00 PM local time and sent his location to his roommate. Around 10:00 PM, his father received a WhatsApp message claiming Imon had been kidnapped and demanding 35,000 euros. Initially, the family suspected his account was hacked, but concern grew when he did not return home the next morning. Raihan Mia subsequently filed a missing person report.

On Sunday afternoon, we went to a bank to transfer the money. Before sending it, we requested to speak with Shahriar once. They refused. We then returned home. Later that evening, around 8:00pm, we learned that Cyprus police had recovered Shahriarโ€™s body.

According to Imon's family, ransom demands continued daily for the next 10 days. His younger brother, Nayon Ahmed, stated they agreed to send the ransom money after negotiations settled on Tk 500,000. They attempted to transfer the funds on Sunday afternoon but were refused a chance to speak with Imon. Later that evening, they learned police had recovered his body. Local authorities in Bangladesh have been informed, but official communication through the embassy is pending.

However, the matter has not yet been officially communicated through the Bangladesh embassy or relevant authorities. If the family seeks government assistance, the administration will take the necessary steps.
