A Dhaka court has handed down a two-year prison sentence to Bidisha Ershad, the former wife of the late Jatiyo Party chairman and former president Hussain Muhammad Ershad. The verdict, delivered in absentia by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam, also includes a fine of Tk 10,000, with a default sentence of one additional month of imprisonment.

The conviction relates to a fraud case filed in 2008 by businessman AKM Mosharrof Hossain Sikdar. The complainant alleged that Bidisha Ershad took Tk 75 lakh in 2001 for a flat in Baridhara, which was never handed over. A cheque issued by Bidisha for the same amount was later dishonored in 2005 due to insufficient funds. The complainant also reported receiving threats when attempting to recover the money.
