Authorities in Savar, Bangladesh, are investigating the death of Riya Moni, a 21-year-old woman whose body was discovered in her home on Monday afternoon. Police have recovered the body and are treating the case as a murder, with initial findings indicating strangulation.

Her husband, Hossen Roni, also known as Roni Islam, an assistant general secretary of the Savar municipality unit of Chhatra Dal (a student wing of a political party), has been accused of the killing. Roni has been absconding since his wife's death. According to police and family members, Roni claimed his wife had committed suicide after bringing her home on Sunday night, but investigators found no evidence to support this assertion.

Roni informed his mother over the phone that his wife had committed suicide. However, no evidence of suicide was found. Preliminary findings indicate that she was strangled to death.

Noor Mohammad, an investigation inspector at Savar Model Police Station, stated that Roni had informed his mother over the phone that his wife had died by suicide. However, preliminary findings at the scene contradicted this, suggesting she was strangled. Police broke open the locked room where the body was found and have sent it for an autopsy.

Saddam Hossain, Riya Moni's maternal uncle, filed a murder case against Roni at the Savar Model Police Station. The case statement notes that the couple had been married for about a year and a half and had experienced frequent disputes. Mahfuz Iqbal, general secretary of the Dhaka District North Chhatra Dal, confirmed Roni's recent appointment and stated that organizational action, including expulsion, would be taken if the allegations are proven.
