Occupational Disability Insurance: The Missed Coverage

Many individuals in Germany delay securing occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU), only to find it significantly more expensive or even unattainable when health concerns emerge later in life.

Young adults in their early twenties typically do not prioritize BU insurance. Their immediate financial focus is often on rent and other living expenses, and serious health issues seem distant. Consequently, discussions about insurance are often postponed.

The situation changes as people age and establish more stable incomes. The question of securing occupational disability coverage then arises. However, by this point, some may have developed chronic conditions, such as persistent back pain, or have undergone treatments for mental health issues like exhaustion or psychosomatic complaints. These pre-existing conditions, often documented in medical records, can present significant obstacles.

When BU insurance becomes most sensible, precisely when a person's ability to work might be compromised, it simultaneously becomes more challenging to obtain. Insurers may impose higher premiums or even deny coverage altogether due to the increased risk associated with these documented health issues. This delay can lead to substantial financial disadvantages for those who eventually seek protection.
