Odense gives every primary school child a regular cultural education

Every primary school pupil in Odense will now receive regular cultural experiences as part of the school year. The municipality’s “Education Journey” program guarantees each child at least one concert, one theatre performance and one museum visit annually.

The initiative covers pupils from grades 0 to 9, around 16,000 children in more than 700 classes at 34 schools. A first-grade class has already started the program.

Many of us remember the experiences outside the classroom best from our school years. This is where children encounter new impressions and share experiences.

Odense’s cultural institutions will provide activities suited to different age groups. Students will encounter different genres, themes and locations through the school system.

Mayor Peter Rahbæk Juel said experiences outside the classroom are among the memories many people retain most clearly from their school years. He welcomed the plan as a way for all children in Odense to encounter music, theatre, art and history at least once a year.
