Odysseus's Island Ithaca Awaits Tourist Wave After Nolan Film Premiere

The Greek island of Ithaca, famed as the mythical home of Odysseus, is bracing for an influx of tourists following the release of Christopher Nolan's latest film. Visitors like Italian lawyer Giorgia Ongarato, who dreamed of visiting Ithaca since childhood, are drawn by the epic tale of Odysseus's journey home.

Despite the film's success and its ability to inspire travel, a degree of controversy has arisen in Greece. The production primarily featured locations far from Homer's homeland, with not a single scene shot on Ithaca itself. Instead, director Nolan chose the Italian island of Favignana for filming, a decision that has divided opinions among Ithaca's approximately 3,000 residents.

Xhimi Xoxha, a restaurant owner in the capital Vathi, expressed optimism, noting the film is already generating "enormous publicity" and predicting continued positive effects. However, Ithaca's mayor, Dionysis Stanitsas, while acknowledging the publicity, voiced disappointment that the island was not featured. He had contacted the production team about filming there, but it proved impossible.

Authorities and businesses on Ithaca are now banking on the film's popularity to drive future tourism.
