Official Arrested Over Deadly Lake Kariba Ferry Disaster

Authorities have arrested Ignatius Chiome, a 49-year-old District Coordinator for the Kariba Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), charging him with culpable homicide in connection with the devastating Lake Kariba ferry disaster. The incident, which occurred on August 11, claimed the lives of 97 people. Chiome has already appeared in court and has been remanded in custody as investigations into Zimbabwe's deadliest maritime accident continue.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, stating that the State would release further details as the investigation progresses. Chiome has yet to enter a plea to the culpable homicide charge. This arrest comes two weeks after the RIDA-operated ferry, Mbuya Nehanda, capsized while en route from Kariba town to Chalala.

The ferry was a vital transport link for remote communities, carrying people, fish, and other goods. Despite an authorized capacity of 90 passengers, reports indicate the vessel was severely overloaded at the time of the incident. The ferry capsized after encountering rough waters on Lake Kariba, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation involving police, local boat operators, and emergency services. Of the estimated 174 people on board, 77 were rescued.
