Official Gets Suspended Sentence for Falsifying Immigration Data to See Ex-Girlfriend

A South Korean public official has been handed a suspended prison sentence for manipulating immigration data in a bid to reconnect with a former girlfriend. The court sentenced the 46-year-old immigration official to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, on charges of forging electronic records.

The official, identified by the surname A, was accused of fabricating information in the immigration system. Specifically, he entered false details suggesting that a former foreign girlfriend, identified as B, was working illegally in the entertainment industry. This action was reportedly taken after their breakup, as he wished to speak with her again.

During the investigation, it was revealed that A had entered the false information into the system's reference notes for foreign nationals, stating B was involved in illegal employment. He later deleted this record himself. The court acknowledged that A had confessed and shown remorse, and that the false record was ultimately removed without causing actual harm to B.
