Ogun community urges govt to clear mounting refuse heaps

Residents and traders in the Lotto community, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, are expressing deep frustration over persistent, mounting heaps of refuse that have plagued the area for about two years. The unmanaged waste has become a significant concern, not only posing environmental and health risks but also driving away potential customers and negatively affecting local businesses.

The officials used to come and pack it, but they later stopped. They now only burn it. People keep dumping more waste, even when the officials warn them to stop.

Traders lament that the foul smell emanating from the refuse, especially during the rainy season, deters customers. One trader, Mrs. Okoro, noted that while waste management officials used to clear the dumps, they now only burn the waste, which fails to provide a lasting solution as people continue to dump more refuse. The situation has become so dire that some passersby resort to urinating and defecating in the area, further exacerbating the unsanitary conditions.

The refuse dumpster has been like this for two years. It smells during the rainy season. The government should provide a place where people can dump their waste so that the officials can properly dispose of it.

Community members are pleading with the government for urgent intervention. They highlight the need for regular waste evacuation trucks and the provision of designated dumping sites to manage waste disposal effectively. A resident, Peter, emphasized the health hazards associated with living in such an unsanitary environment, while another, Ayobami, acknowledged that community members also contribute to the problem by continuing to dump waste there.

I came here last August, and I met the heap of refuse. It is affecting my business because whenever people want to buy something and they see the refuse, it chases them away.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, has stated that the government will collaborate with the community development association to find a lasting solution to the refuse problem. However, residents remain anxious for concrete action to address the long-standing issue that is significantly degrading their living conditions and economic prospects.

It is unhealthy for people to stay where there is refuse. It will benefit everyone if the government provides a truck to evacuate the waste.
