Ogun ex-lawmaker urges FG to institutionalise food bank programme

A former member of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Kayode Oladele, has lauded the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her "compassionate leadership" in launching the National Community Food Bank Programme for the Southwest Zone. The initiative, inaugurated in Abeokuta, Ogun State, aims to provide essential food supplies to vulnerable Nigerians.

The launch of the Zonal National Community Food Bank programme by our distinguished First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is a highly commendable initiative and another clear demonstration of her compassion and genuine concern for the welfare of Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable members of our society.

Oladele, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, described the food bank program as a "remarkable demonstration of compassion, purposeful leadership and commitment to the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians." He noted that the launch, which included the inauguration of food banks in Sagamu, Yewa North, and Abeokuta South, highlighted the First Lady's understanding of the daily challenges faced by ordinary citizens and her dedication to making a tangible difference.

"The Community Food Bank initiative is particularly significant because it addresses one of the most fundamental needs of every human being, which is access to food," Oladele stated. He added that the program offers immediate relief to many households and complements the social intervention efforts of President Bola Tinubu's administration. The distribution of food items targets vulnerable and indigent residents, providing crucial support.

Urging the Federal Government to build upon this effort, Oladele called for the institutionalization of the National Community Food Bank. He proposed that it become a permanent component of Nigeria's food security and social protection system. This, he believes, would ensure the program's benefits reach a wider segment of the Nigerian population across the country, creating enduring structures for sustained impact.
