Ogun PDP candidate Adebutu confident in transforming state, highlights experience

Oladipupo Adebutu, the governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria's Ogun State, has strongly defended his capacity to lead and transform the state, brushing aside criticisms that he lacks the necessary qualifications.

Adebutu, who has been involved in business, agriculture, and politics for over three decades, stated during a media parley in Abeokuta that his extensive experience has prepared him for governance. He addressed allegations that he has lived off the wealth of his father, billionaire businessman Kensington Adebutu, asserting that he has independently built successful businesses, created numerous jobs, and contributed significantly to economic development through investments in agriculture and agro-processing.

"Unfortunately, many narratives have been created about me and my intentions. Some critics suggest that I merely live on my family’s achievements or that I have built nothing of my own," Adebutu said. He countered this by stating, "What matters is what we do with the opportunities we are given. I have used my resources to build businesses, create jobs and contribute to economic development." Adebutu highlighted his significant investments in livestock farming and meat processing, noting that his farms provide employment and support food production. He also mentioned distributing livestock to vulnerable citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Looking ahead to governance, Adebutu identified insecurity as the paramount challenge facing Nigeria and pledged to make it the top priority of his administration if elected governor in 2027. "The foremost challenge facing Nigeria today is insecurity. That is why security occupies the first position on our agenda. We cannot build a prosperous society without ensuring the safety of lives and property," he declared. He also spoke about his past support for security agencies and stressed the need for improved security infrastructure. Additionally, Adebutu advocated for greater autonomy for local governments, arguing that grassroots development has been hampered by excessive state control.

The media parley was attended by key PDP leaders, including the state chairman Abayomi Tella and deputy governorship candidate Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, as well as former senator Iyabo Obasanjo. Adebutu's campaign emphasizes his business acumen and commitment to addressing critical issues like security and local governance.
