Ogun poly students block highway protesting colleague's killing in robbery attack

Students of DS Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic in Ogun State blocked the busy Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway on Tuesday, protesting the killing of a fellow student during a robbery attack. The demonstration caused significant traffic congestion on the highway.

The protest followed an overnight raid by suspected armed robbers on Eruku Community, located behind the institution, where many students reside. Videos of the students demanding improved security circulated on social media. The polytechnic's Rector, Dr. Goke Rafiu, confirmed that robbers invaded about 15 houses, resulting in one student's death and three others sustaining injuries. One injured student was taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta for treatment.

What happened was that some armed robbers raided about 15 houses in Eruku where some of our students are living. The community is actually behind the school, and during the attack, one of the students was killed while about three others were injured.

Rafiu stated that institution management, along with police and governing council members, were in the community to address the situation. He appealed to the protesting students to remain calm while efforts are made to enhance security. In response to the incident, the polytechnic postponed examinations scheduled for July 28 and 29 to honor the deceased and allow affected students emotional recovery time. New exam dates will be announced later.

The Students' Union Government President, Comrade Owoigbe Blessing, detailed that the robbers attacked around midnight. She identified the deceased as a final-year HND II student and mentioned a female student suffered a severed ear, while another student shot during the attack was rushed to the hospital. She urged the Ogun State Government to strengthen security measures in the area.
