Ohio Man Who Smashed Windows at JD Vance’s Home With Hammer Pleads Guilty

William DeFoor, 26, admitted in federal court that he used a hammer to damage property at Vice President JD Vance’s protected Cincinnati residence in January.

DeFoor pleaded guilty to charges of engaging in physical violence against government officials or property and causing willful injury or depredation to U.S. property. The remaining charges were dismissed under a plea agreement. He also waived his right to a jury trial and to appeal his sentence.

Federal prosecutors said Secret Service agents saw DeFoor running along the fence of the residence shortly after midnight on January 5. Court documents allege that he first struck the window of an unmarked federal law-enforcement vehicle, then smashed large historic windows at the home. Prosecutors estimated the damage at about $28,000.

U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II said, “Acts of violence directed against our political leaders, their families, or property, have no place in our society and will not be tolerated.”

DeFoor had remained in custody since his arrest and was later indicted by a federal grand jury. He faces up to 10 years in prison on each count. He must also pay approximately $28,000 in restitution and stay at least 350 yards from any residence belonging to Vance or his family, whether occupied or not. A sentencing date will be set later.
