Oil prices fall on optimism over peace between Iran and US

Crude oil prices experienced a notable decline on Friday, driven by a wave of optimism surrounding potential peace negotiations between Iran and the United States. The easing of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East has directly impacted market sentiment, leading traders to anticipate a de-escalation of conflict. Brent crude futures for August delivery saw a significant drop of 3.38%, settling at $87.33 per barrel. Similarly, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures for July delivery retreated by 3.23%, closing at $84.88 per barrel. Analysts suggest that a decisive advancement in U.S.-Iran negotiations could pave the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic maritime passage, which previously handled a fifth of the world's oil supply before regional conflicts intensified, has been largely obstructed by Iran since late February. The markets have reacted positively to announcements, such as one from Donald Trump regarding a "very good agreement" with Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also indicated progress, stating on X that the "memorandum of understanding of Islamabad (Pakistan's capital, mediator in the negotiations) has never been so close."
