Oklahoma City Thunder one win from NBA Finals after Game 5 victory

The Oklahoma City Thunder are on the brink of returning to the NBA Finals after a decisive 127-114 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. The Thunder now hold a commanding 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, with a chance to clinch the title at home.

A critical surge in the second quarter's end and the third quarter's beginning propelled the Thunder from a narrow 45-44 lead to an insurmountable 78-58 advantage. This double-digit lead proved too much for the Spurs to overcome, as they were unable to narrow the deficit to less than eight points for the remainder of the game.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander spearheaded the Thunder's offense, pouring in 32 points, a significant portion of which came from the free-throw line where he shot 16-of-7. Alex Caruso provided crucial support off the bench with 22 points, and Jared McCain added an unexpected 20 points. The Thunder's big men, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, both recorded double-doubles, with Holmgren contributing 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Hartenstein adding 12 points and 15 rebounds.

For the Spurs, Stephon Castle was the top scorer with 24 points, supported by Julian Champagnie's 22. Star player Victor Wembanyama had a relatively quiet game by his standards, scoring 20 points with only 6 rebounds and one assist.

The series now shifts back to San Antonio for Game 6 on Thursday night. Should the Spurs force a Game 7, it would be played in Oklahoma City on Saturday night. The winner of this series will advance to the NBA Finals to face the New York Knicks, who swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
