Okpebholo rewards Edo Queens with N50m for WAFU-B title

Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo has awarded N50 million to Edo Queens and their officials after the team secured the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League title.

Okpebholo announced the reward on Tuesday at Government House in Benin during a ceremony presenting the team with both the 2025-26 Nigeria Women’s Football League trophy and the 2026 WAFU-B title.

Edo Queens drew 2-2 with Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies after regulation time before winning the final 4-1 in a penalty shootout. The governor said the result carried significance for Edo State and Nigeria, and praised the players’ resilience and determination throughout the competition.

For me, this trophy matters to Edo people and the country. I must commend the players for their doggedness. I also want to thank the coaching crew and other officials. I want to reward the team with the sum of N50 million.

Okpebholo said he expected Edo Queens to win the shootout after observing the goalkeeper’s composure and strategy. He singled out the goalkeeper’s saves as crucial and also thanked the coach and technical crew for their contributions.

Edo Sports Commission Chairman Amadin Enabulele said winning the Nigerian league and the WAFU-B championship in the same season required grit, unity, discipline, resilience and belief. He praised the team’s new management for maintaining the club’s progress and raising its standards.
