Okpekpe Int’l 10km Race gets broadcast deal

The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, a significant event in West African athletics, is set to be broadcast live globally on May 30. Organizers announced that this broadcast will reach an international audience, highlighting the race's growing stature. This event holds the distinction of being the first road race in West Africa to be awarded World Athletics Label status, underscoring its quality and organization.

First staged in 2013, the Okpekpe race has evolved into one of Africa's premier road running competitions. It consistently draws elite athletes from prominent running nations such as Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda, alongside Nigeria's top talent. The challenging course spans 10 kilometers, beginning on Apana Road and concluding in the hilltop community of Okpekpe, located in Nigeria’s Edo State.

Record holders for the course include Kenya's Daniel Simiu Ebenyo, who set the men's record at 28 minutes and 28 seconds, and Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui, a Kenya-born Kazakhstani, who holds the women's record of 32 minutes and 38 seconds, both set in 2023. Organizers anticipate a strong field for the upcoming edition, with its prize money and Gold Label status continuing to attract international participation.

Broadcast coverage will be accessible via M4STV's platforms, including its website and mobile applications available on major app stores. A veteran athletics journalist will provide commentary for the event.

Beyond its athletic significance, the Okpekpe race has been recognized for its positive impact on Edo State's economy. It has been credited with boosting tourism and attracting investment, leveraging Okpekpe's scenic hilltop environment and agricultural potential to draw visitors and investors.
