Old football grounds in Adegem get new life as a recreational park

In Adegem, part of the Maldegem municipality, plans are underway to repurpose the old football fields of VK Adegem into a vibrant new recreational park. The decision by the municipal government marks a significant step in revitalizing the site, which became available after the football club merged with SK Maldegem.

The project, which will unfold in several phases, aims to create a much-needed green oasis for residents. "Additionally, we will provide play facilities for children and benches for reading a book." The park will also partially function as the garden for De Vierklaver, a residential facility for people with disabilities, fostering integration and shared community space.

The first phase of development has been allocated a budget of 350,000 euros. This initial stage will focus on dividing the expansive grounds into distinct zones using tree lines, which will later be developed further. Future plans for the park include incorporating changes in elevation and water features to enhance its aesthetic and recreational appeal. "We have already sown wildflowers on the grounds," Van Hecke noted, observing that "many people are already coming to see it."

Beyond the recreational park, the municipality also intends to further develop the cultural center Den Hoogen Pad, envisioning it as a hub for culture, education, and community gatherings. Additionally, the Zandakkers area will be enhanced with facilities for after-school care, youth activities, and play areas, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to improving community amenities and quality of life in Adegem.
