Oliver Mair appointed Jamaica's new Consul General in New York

Roderick Oliver Mair, currently Jamaica's Consul General to the Southeast United States, has been appointed to lead the Consulate General in New York. The appointment comes after Mair's successful seven-year tenure in Miami, where he significantly engaged with the Jamaican diaspora and mobilized support for the island nation.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, expressed confidence in Mair's abilities, citing his "exceptional ability to build relationships, inspire confidence and mobilise support for Jamaica." She highlighted his work in Southern Florida, which demonstrated a commitment to Jamaican nationals, diaspora engagement, and practical partnerships that benefited both Jamaicans at home and abroad.

New York is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Jamaican communities in the world. As consul-general in Miami, Oliver Mair has demonstrated an exceptional ability to build relationships, inspire confidence and mobilise support for Jamaica.

In his new role, Mair will serve Jamaica's largest overseas population across 33 states. He will also hold concurrent accreditation to Bermuda and Puerto Rico. During his time in Miami, Mair spearheaded initiatives in diaspora engagement, trade and investment promotion, and health and education partnerships. He also served as dean of the South Florida Caribbean Consular Corps and deputy dean of the South Florida Consular Corps.

Mair is credited with establishing the annual Jamaica Hi-5 Reggae Run/Walk, a major community event that promotes healthy lifestyles and raises funds for Jamaica's healthcare sector. The initiative has significantly supported the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ Adopt-a-Clinic Programme. In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, he played a key coordinating role in supporting Jamaica's relief efforts through the Miami Consulate.
