Oluremi Tinubu announces N500 million relief package for Calabar fire victims

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has announced a N500 million presidential relief package for 18 business owners whose livelihoods were damaged by the Aug. 22 fire at the SPAR shopping mall in Calabar, Cross River State.

Speaking in Calabar during the launch of the South-South phase of the National Community Food Bank Programme, Tinubu said President Bola Tinubu approved N25 million for each affected business owner. The grants total N450 million and are intended to help them recover from losses caused by the fire.

“Mr. President commiserates with the government and people of Cross River over this unfortunate incident that destroyed many businesses and livelihoods,” she said. “Mr President has asked me to give N25 million for each of the 18 business owners affected. This intervention is to provide immediate support and help victims recover from their losses.”

Tinubu also announced N50 million for women’s groups, which she said had been presented to the wife of Cross River Governor Bishop Eyoanwan Otu. Another N15 million went to women who welcomed her to the state.

The food bank program, she said, represents a deliberate and sustainable response to food insecurity and malnutrition across Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers states. It targets children under six, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.
